Our Logo

Here is why: Our logo was designed by a Carnegie Mellon University student decades ago by combining several tools that a geologist would use in their everyday professional life. One of those tools is the Brunton Compass.  A unique instrument, this compass was designed to be read by looking at the attached mirror to obtain azimuth readings.  While holding the compass at waist-height, the geologist lines up the target, needle, and guide line while looking through the mirror of the compass. Looking directly at the face, the west and east headings are reversed. However, when properly looking into the mirror, the headings appear in the correct orientation!
